Cbd Oil (Cannabidiol) For Mental Health?
What is CBD and what can it be used to treat?
Cannabidiol, better known as CBD oil, is said to have benefits in treating the symptoms of anxiety and may have therapeutic benefits for brain disorders such as psychosis and depression and other anxiety disorders including panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. Studies suggest that CBD oil has anti-anxiety and antidepressant effects.
Cannabidiol (CBD) oil is a natural plant-based oil that contains phyto (plant) chemicals called cannabinoids. Cannabinoids are ‘feel good’ molecules naturally made by the body. Research indicates that CBD appears to have a positive reaction with serotonin receptors in the brain.
Serotonin impacts a range of functions in the body, including a person's emotional state and feelings of well-being or happiness. Keeping serotonin levels balanced is often a key therapy for people with depression and anxiety disorders.
In a 2018 study researchers indicated that CBD has promise as a fast-acting antidepressant.
Does CBD oil have side effects?
CBD oil is a non-intoxicating marijuana extract with a more natural approach and has shown promise as a treatment for those who live with depression and anxiety disorders. Initial studies show CBD oil as a hopeful treatment for both depression and anxiety, and is suggested to cause little to no side effects.
Anxiety disorders and depression are normally treated with pharmaceutical drugs or benzodiazepines which can cause a number of difficult side effects such as drowsiness, dizziness, insomnia etc.
Does CBD oil make you high?
CBD is a non-psychoactive form of cannabinoid which has been found not to interfere with the cognitive functions of the brain. It does not get you high or cause a feeling of euphoria, in contrast to THC, which alters the cognitive functions of the brain.
Is CBD addictive?
According to a recent report by the World Health Organization, CBD is not addictive and it has no potential for abuse or dependence. This is mostly because CBD does not contain any addictive substances.
Is CBD oil safe to use?
CBD seems to be extremely safe. A World Health Organisation report issued in 2017 concluded that cannabidiol does not appear to have abuse potential or cause harm, although it is always best to seek advice from your GP.
Although there is potential promise for those with mental health issues in the use of CBD oil, there are risks. Above all, we need more research to determine the best dosage for effective treatment.
Is CBD oil legal?
There has been a large amount of controversy surrounding the legality of CBD oil.
CBD oil is legal across the UK for medicinal purposes, provided it has been derived from an industrial hemp strain that is EU-approved.
There are strict restrictions in place with regard to CBD oil’s THC content- for CBD oil to be legal in the UK, it must contain no more than 0.2 per cent THC, and the THC must not be easily separated from it.
