Becoming a personal trainer is something to be proud of; it goes far further than just teaching someone how to lift weights. The job is not always glamorous, but the satisfaction of helping someone improve their health more than makes up for the times when you might be cleaning gym equipment. Job satisfaction is key in pursuing a career and being a personal trainer or fitness instructor certainly delivers job satisfaction. Let’s look at an example:
You are approached by someone who is overweight, eats badly, and can hardly do a push up (let alone run a mile). That someone wants to hit a certain percentage body fat and requires you to help them achieve it. You then sit down with them to put together nutrition and exercise plans that will help them hit their target. Over the coming weeks and months you help keep them motivated, teach them new techniques and help them find a new found energy. If you do your job properly the end result is someone who may have drastically changed their lifestyle and is eternally grateful for your help.
It doesn’t take a genius to realise that this whole process of personal training can be incredibly rewarding.
Contrary to many people’s opinions personal trainers do not just stand around in tight t-shirts drinking protein shakes. They are true experts in their field. There are obviously varying levels of knowledge but many trainers and instructors take their jobs very seriously. Speak to a good trainer and he or she will be constantly attending courses in order further their knowledge. Sports science is no longer a dark art and look to utilise this growing sector in order to provide their clients with the very best service. As such, many personal trainers look to carve out a niche within the industry, whether that be in endurance, weight loss or strength.

The skill set is not just confined to exercise. A large portion of instructors are self-employed. They are their own boss. This comes with responsibilities and the requirement to develop essential business skills – sales being one of them. You have to attract potential customers and like any business, sales is such an essential skill. Following this is client management. Managing a client’s expectations is crucial in keeping them motivated; again another skill that permeates throughout the business world. And finally…delivery. Clients expect results and although it requires a significant amount of work on their end, trainers must accept responsibility as well. Good results will turn into referrals and increase the amount of clients on your books. As a personal trainer you are in charge of your own career and this is one of the most rewarding things about being a trainer.
All of these factors add up to a lot more than just getting people fit. The job satisfaction is not confined to simply seeing your client hit their targets. Of course it is a large part, but the whole process of running your own business, training people and deciding which area you would like to specialise in returns a considerable amount of job satisfaction.
